There are two methods that Macs can use to print to Linux
boxes - papd, or lpr. I haven't successfully managed to get either working
reliably, so my notes here are going to be super sketchy...
PAPD
Runs as a daemon in the same fashion as afpd. It's basically a wrapper
for LPR, passing the apple print job onto lpr for printing.
My papd fails with:
No such printer: lp
printcap problem: lp
can't register Colour:LaserWriter@*
It's right - there is no printer "lp". But I
didn't ask it for one...
LPR
We only recently worked out how to get around the
printing difficulties we'd been experiencing with Macs and LPR. We're
using LPRng , which is maintained by
the very helpful Patrick Powell. It turns out that upgrading your Mac
to OS9.2.2, and all of the printtools to the latest versions will make
them connect, print, and be nice and happy with LPRng. Sorry it's not
more scientific than that - that's just our mileage! This
isn't strictly speaking a Netatalk thing, but it's about printing from
Macs, so why not I figure.
To make it work you'll need printtool installed. Run printtool,
add a new printer (you'll need the dns name, netbios name or IP address
depending upon how clients in your network can find the server), the LPR
queue name, and the appropriate PPD file.
