Our users are using Quark Xpress 4.1, so this information
pertains to them... We're using 1.5pre6, kernel 2.4, ext2fs.
Symptoms are:
- Can open document successfully. Click "Save"
- will fail, with an error code indicating that the file is already
locked;
- Cannot save to a new document with the same error code;
- This error message may not appear immediately - it may
only appear under heavy load, or extended use. If you're going to try
and replicate it, you'll need at least 30 minutes, and 4 people all
busily pretending to work saving files every few seconds;
- Not related to the size of the of file. Save either
works or doesn't work, regardless of the size of the files being accessed
/ saved;
- Photoshop users may experience similar difficulties,
but we found this to be much rarer;
- Using Appletalk over IP vs Appletalk doesn't make any
difference to how it works.
Using the configure option --with-flock-locks fixed this
problem. Apparently this doesn't lock files at all if you're using a 2.2
kernel.
